Kevin van Giel

Kevin Van Giel began his musical career at the music academy of Turnhout (Belgium) with Jef Vleugels. At this academy he earned his high-degree diplomas of ensemble playing and euphonium with highest distinction. After secondary school (Sciences- Mathematics) at the St. Jan Berchmans College in Malle he continued his studies at Group T in Leuven, where he graduated as a Master in industrial sciences. He specialized in ICT with focus on Internet computing. During his engineering studies Kevin took private lessons from euphonium player Olivier Haas for one year and three years from Nick Ost. During his last two years at Group T Kevin also began part-time euphonium studies at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven. He now studies music full time with Nick Ost and is in his first Masters, combined with the specific teacher training. He also follows the three-year HaFaBra conducting course at the Servais academy in Halle with Luc Vertommen.

Kevin took master classes from David Thornton, Steven Mead, David King, Les Neish, Brian Bowen and David Childs. He has twice won the national competition for soloists, organized by Vlamo (1999, 2003). In 2010 he obtained some excellent results, including a semi-finalist place at the European Soloist Championships in Linz and the award for best soloist at the Flemish Open Brass Band Championships. In 2011 he saw himself awarded a place in the semi-final of the ‘New Tenuto’ competition and winning the audition for the Band of the Royal Air Force. Kevin plays regularly as a freelance musician with wind orchestras, fanfare bands and brass bands in Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as symphonic orchestras, including the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Flemish Philharmonic.

Kevin plays principal euphonium with brass band ‘De Kempengalm’ from Vlimmeren and brass band ‘Bacchus’ from Lennik and plays second euphonium with brass band Buizingen. With this band he defended twice the Belgian flag on the European Brass Band Championships (Stavanger 2008, Linz 2010). In addition, Kevin put some good steps in the conducting world. He conducts Crescendo – the beginners band of ‘De Kempengalm’, the youth wind band ‘St Cecilia’ from Rotselaar and youth fanfare band ‘De Onafhankelijkheid’ from Wiekevorst. He is regularly asked to conduct at play-ins and music camps. Finally, he teaches the young brass players of fanfare band ‘Vlamingen Vooruit’ from Kortenberg.
